The graphic adventure is designed to uncover the main sources of<strong> air pollution<\/strong>, <strong>both indoors and outdoors<\/strong>. Set in a futuristic city called Smogville, the web game targets students aged 11 and up. Players can explore various urban environments and navigate through the city, with the choices they make determining the fate of the two protagonists\u2014<strong>Skyler<\/strong> and <strong>Noveria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-5d2f3228 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:65%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-la-soluzione-adottata\">The solution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Synesthesia\u2019s Technologies, in collaboration with Fondazione Veronesi\u2019s team, focused on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Defining the game design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Developing the game<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Creating a dedicated website<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the development of the web game, the <strong>Ren\u2019Py<\/strong> engine was used, which is ideal for creating <strong>Visual Novel Games<\/strong>. The game is accessible on both desktop and mobile platforms, allowing users to immerse themselves in the Smogville environment through engaging audio effects, graphic animations, and detailed illustrations.<br\/>At the end of the game, the system provides an \u201cadventure score\u201d based on how risky the player\u2019s decisions were\u2014reflecting their exposure to air pollution risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project involved multiple partners: Fondazione Veronesi, in collaboration with <strong>Symmaceo Communications<\/strong>, developed the story, script, character design, maps, and illustrations. Game design was handled by <strong>Luca Gambadoro and Marco Mazzaglia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column col-image is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/new.synesthesia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/smogville_mobile-1-1.png\" alt=\"Smogville\" class=\"wp-image-20915\" style=\"width:300px;height:undefinedpx\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-5d2f3228 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column col-image is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/new.synesthesia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/smogville07-1.jpg\" alt=\"Smogville\" class=\"wp-image-20917\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:65%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-risultati\">Results<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-has-quote wp-block-paragraph\"><p class=\"is-style-has-quote wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c<\/em>Smogville was integrated into the \u201cTutti per aria!\u201d project, an educational initiative by Fondazione CRT, conceived and developed by Fondazione Veronesi. The program featured workshops addressing air pollution and the importance of protecting both oneself and the environment.&#13;\nFrom March to April 2023, over 2,100 middle school students from Piedmont and Valle d\u2019Aosta participated in these workshops, with Smogville serving as the centerpiece of the educational offering. Starting in the 2023-24 school year, the program will expand across Italy.&#13;\nWe strongly believe in video games as an innovative tool for informal education in schools. We used it to create an engaging and challenging story while ensuring the scientific message and its accuracy remained intact. It\u2019s crucial for us to promote projects focused on health education, especially when the topic\u2014air pollution\u2014affects us all so closely.
